This week has been wet and cool. Temperatures were in the mid forties most of the week with rain. It rained so much that the road had flooded spots. The wind was strong and made walking to and from school difficult. The rain has made the river’s current strong and fast. Four people died in the last week from boat accidents. I took a boat ride up river today to help a teacher pick up his gear from a fish camp where he stayed while moose hunting. Moose season ended here Friday night. I have yet to see a moose in person. I’ve seen many pictures and videos of moose cows and calves in the area. I know one villager killed a bull moose just outside the east end of the village. Another bull was spotted between the school and the airfield. I’ll include some pictures of the trees that are changing color in the comments. One thing of note that I learned today. Many people take better care of their fish camps than they do their village home. The fish camp where we went to pick up the gear was clean and mowed. I was told there was a riding lawnmower there that had been shipped in for that purpose. This camp was about 45 minutes up river from the village. The day was nice for a boat ride and we made it back before the evening rain started.
We had five students leave this week for a trip to Anchorage. They will be there one week touring the university of Alaska Anchorage campus. They will be exposed to possible career choices. They are very bright students with a desire to be more than wives or hunters.
I received packages this week from some of the readers of this blog. I thank them for their generous gifts. Some boxes contained school supplies, bibles and candy for the kids. Another was food and snacks for me. I found myself giving the candy in my box away to the kids. I made the mistake of tipping my hand too early with the candy. I had planned on giving it away a little at a time but I couldn’t say no to them when they kept asking for more. As soon as one heard that I had it they chased me down begging for some. It was gone quick.
I got a surprise when I got home on Friday afternoon. Someone had ordered new furniture and appliances for some of the apartments. When I opened my door I could barely get inside because boxes were blocking my way. I have a new stove, table and chairs and a dresser and 2 lamps. There was also a new refrigerator. My current is also new. I took the packing tape off of it when I moved in. I gave the newest refrigerator to a couple of teachers who were in need of it. I’m making a trade tomorrow for another recliner to replace the couch in here. Currently, if you sit on the couch be prepared to be crippled. The springs are shot in it and it will do damage to your backside if you sit in the wrong spot.
